About me and 2016forVietnam

About me...

Hi there! Most of you already know me and probably will not be (much) surprised by my new adventure.

For as long as I can recall I have been fascinated by the idea of exploring. Going on a long journey somewhere unknown, engaging into a new activity, seeking the encounter that hides the promise of a thrilling find, the possibility to experience the world in a whole different way and discover an unknown me. I guess, this is what is most relevant about me now...

The idea...

2016forVietnam is a project of many challenges.

Within one month, I will cycle 2016 km across Vietnam.

It is a country with developing infrastructure, roads are poorly signed, traffic is notoriously dangerous, tropical climate and pollution unhealthy for prolonged physical exercise.

The insufficient few words I can mumble in Vietnamese language, the local food, accommodating myself wherever I happen to be on the road, all of this will sure make for an eventful and memorable experience.

In addition to the challenge of cycling, I aim to raise US$2016 in support of the Rice Scholarship Program.

The idea to ride a bicycle for this cause originates in contemplation of my present life in Vietnam and the possibilities this life gives me. At the moment, I enjoy the privilege to have the means as well as the time to indulge my travel curiosity and do a trip like this. Coming from a modest family from Bulgaria, this hasn’t always been the case. As I reflect on the contrast of my past and present situation, I am constantly aware of what I have right now and what others don’t. It is for this reason that I’d like to put in use the means I have - physical, mental and financial - to support in a small way those who struggle for their basic existential needs yet still keep on learning and strive to develop.

The people around 2016forVietnam...

I would like to mention a few people closely involved in this project.

I share all the adventures on this long ride with Lilyana, a longtime Bulgarian friend. Thank you for embracing my idea and putting up with me, come rain or shine (literally) for one month on some of the most dangerous roads of the world.

Thank you, Vân Nguyễn, for all your involvement, communication, translation, help organising the fundraiser, and so much more!

Thank you, Georgi, for preparing our bikes for this long ride.

Fellow cyclists, if you want to buy/rent/repair a bike in Hanoi, this is the place to go.

Address: Lâm Velo, 53 Trich Sai, Hanoi

Thank you, Gergana, for allowing me to use your stunning photos for the cover pages of my blog.

A special thanks goes to my family.

I am forever grateful for your endless belief and support. You encourage and inspire me in so many ways!

Last but not least, thank you all for your interest in following my ride, sharing the blog, making a donation!
